Since 2020, Canberra Metro Operations has run a competition for Year 11 and 12 graphic design students to design a rail safety poster to promote community awareness and help modify student behaviour around the rail network.

This work forms part of the student’s educational curriculum. They are provided with a brief to provide key messages for passengers, vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.

The Rail Safety Poster competition is a tremendously successful initiative which fulfills all the objectives of education, awareness and community engagement. Through the involvement of local student participation in the creativity of rail safety messaging, new conversations are generated both within and across the broader school community.

The initiative is an innovative way of promoting rail safety education and awareness. The competition will be run again this year during Rail Safety Week in August.
