Mia Jensen - Data Scientist, 2019 CIMIC Group graduate cohort
After graduating from her Bachelor of Science majoring in statistics, Mia Jensen joined the 2019 cohort of the CIMIC Group graduate program to begin a role in data science.
The CIMIC Group graduate program offers three 8-month rotations where graduates can work across projects, sectors, operating companies within the Group in Australia.
“My role is with the Centre of Excellence team, which is an innovations team at UGL. We look at different areas throughout UGL and find process improvements to increase efficiencies. I do a lot of data collection, cleansing, visualisation and analysis. It’s the whole process of where data comes from and the output of it so people can understand their data better. The solutions we develop may come in the form of apps and online forms for data collection through to developing dashboards to help our clients make data driven decisions."
Why did you choose the CIMIC graduate program?
“CIMIC was listed as one of the top grad employers at the time which caught my interest. They also had a unique program in data science which no other company offered and being a data scientist was what I had envisioned being in 10 years – so I just jumped at it now!”

What have you enjoyed most about the rotations we offer?
“I stayed with this team for the entirety of my program. I had other opportunities, but UGL suited me the best – I’m thriving here so why would I change! That’s the beauty of the program, you can utilise the rotations to move across the business, or you could stay if you’ve found where you’re meant to be.
“By the second year I was also given so much more responsibility and leadership opportunities that set me up for success in transitioning out of the graduate program.”
What do you enjoy about working at UGL?
“I have a very supportive team at UGL who mentor me and help me grow. I also had a plenty of opportunity for professional development, they’re supportive of learning here and love seeing that passion for growth in us.
“I moved from Sydney to Brisbane when I joined UGL and the fact that I’ve made some quite close friendships while I’ve been up here has been a huge reflection of the culture at UGL I think.
“I have a great network with the other Operating Companies too. The Thiess and Sedgman data science team are right next door, we catch up often – it’s a supportive group.”
““It’ll be a once in a lifetime opportunity and CIMIC is a great place to kickstart your career!”
Can you share any wisdom for our new 2021 cohort?
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Put yourself out there, do that training course or put your hand up for challenges and opportunities. Ask to go out on site and see what they do out on the field. Expand your network and get to know the business in a broader sense.”
Mia was awarded the runner-up in the functional category for UGL as part of the CIMIC Group Graduate of the Year Award for 2020, recognising the exceptional achievements of our graduates, in engineering and other professional disciplines.
