Sophie Counsell - Reliability Engineer, 2018 CIMIC Group graduate cohort
Sophie is part of the 2018 CIMIC Group graduate cohort. After completing a Mechatronics degree at the University of Wollongong, she joined the UGL team at Broadmeadow, working on technology upgrades for the Tangara fleet for Sydney Trains.
The CIMIC Group graduate program offers three 8-month rotations which grads can work across projects, sectors, operating companies within the Group in Australia. After completing her first rotation, Sophie then moved to Thiess where she is a reliability engineer in the mobile maintenance department at a mine site in Western Australia.
“My degree was around automation and robotics and they have autonomous dump trucks on that mine. I contacted the project team to find out about the opportunities available”
What have you enjoyed most about the program?
“The diverse opportunities available. I’m now working FIFO on a mine site so it’s as different to working in an office in Newcastle as you can get. It’s great to see this side of the country and gain knowledge in different industries”
What do you enjoy about working at UGL?
“I’ve found working in UGL and the CIMIC Group to be very supportive of women in non-traditional roles. Everyone’s really welcoming and supportive; I don’t think I get treated any differently to the men
”What advice would you give to our graduates?
“Give it a go and don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask to do what you’re interested in. People are really accommodating where they can be”
Sophie is part of the Graduate Program Committee which aims to continually improve and progress the program and provide graduates with as many opportunities as possible. Members include graduate representatives from all opcos. “We are a friendly face that the new cohort can come to with any issues or suggestions.”
Those in the 2019 cohort will get the chance to hear about Sophie’s journey as she joins the panel as a speaker at the graduate induction.
