SAFETY AND HEALTH
UGL Resources places an important emphasis on the safety and health of our employees. We put a lot of energy into building a safety culture built on the premise that all injuries are preventable. This safety culture, operating under the brand ‘USafe’, is the driver behind our HSSE performance.

Our approach to safety is proactive, and preventative. UGL Resources has developed a comprehensive strategy of continual improvement across all of its operations, meaning we continually introduce safety initiatives across our work sites; any hazards identified on one site are quickly communicated to other sites to allow them to take preventative measures.

Our strategy relies upon strong line management, employee use of the HSSE management system, high visibility of UGL Resources’ safety culture via the ‘USafe’ logo and a range of USafe based programs including:

Hazob
Hazob is a simple process for observing and removing hazards from the workplace. This process is supported by Hazob check sheets for recording and reporting hazards.

STARR
Starr promotes personal safety responsibility by encouraging staff to:

• Observe UGL staff at work to identify safe and unsafe behaviour;
• Record all observations;
• Give constructive feedback to UGL workers;
• Promptly forward observation checklists to the site safety advisor; and
• Conduct observations for each site or project at least twice a week.

UTrac
This collection of databases support UGL’s business management system by helping staff plan, record and track key meetings, inspections, audits and incidents and manage any corrective or preventative actions required.
