Solar team pay respects to local Indigenous community during NAIDOC Week

 UGL teams celebrate NAIDOC Week each year by participating in a range of activities to support local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the communities in which we operate. 

Our project team delivering the Tailem Bend Solar Farm in South Australia, downed tools briefly to host a BBQ onsite to recognise NAIDOC Week and pay their respects to members of their local Indigenous community.

The team has strong ties to the local community and a real commitment to diversity and inclusion, with over 13% of team members proudly celebrating their Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander heritage.

Our team from the Lower South Creek Wastewater Treatment project, at the Riverstone site took time out to acknowledge and show their commitment to NAIDOC week.




Supporting the delivery of the first indigenous traineeship program in rail construction

A partnership between UGL, Infraworks and the Sydney Metro Northwest Systems Joint Venture (SJV) is proud to be creating Indigenous employment in rail construction through a 12-month traineeship program. The program is targeted at Indigenous people who have an interest in rail construction.

No prior experience is needed, just the motivation to learn.  UGL teams work with the trainees to help them gain valuable onsite experience and complete the necessary training to equip them to begin their

careers in the rail industry.  Along with the valuable training, Infraworks is providing ongoing mentoring and pastoral care throughout the traineeship.

A strong response was received from local Aboriginal communities for the first intake. Nine trainees were recruited and will complete a Certificate III in Rail Infrastructure during the 12-month program.

Once the first cohort have completed the program the vision is that they retain employment in rail construction, encourage other trainees to come through the program and act as mentors.

We value the richness of diversity and promote work environments where all are treated fairly and respectfully. Through UGL’s Inclusion calendar, we promote national, religious and cultural days to recognise and celebrate our workplace diversity.

Harmony Day

On 21 March each year, UGL teams on sites and projects recognise Harmony Day to celebrate their own and Australia's cultural diversity, inclusiveness, respect and promote a sense of belonging.

Teams decorate their workplaces in orange and host food festivals where people bring in a plate of food from their cultural background or a country they have recently visited.

International Womens Day

International Women’s Day

Each International Women’s day, UGL teams across our organisation get into the spirit of raising awareness of improving gender diversity in our workplaces.

Whether it’s listening to an inspiring guest speaker, making a #PressforProgress pledge with the International Women’s’ Day community or baking delicious cakes to raise money for a worthy charity in the local community, our teams get involved.

Joining forces to help young Indigenous students

UGL employees around Australia had good reason to be specially inspired for National Reconciliation Week this year.

UGL has entered into a partnership with the Clontarf Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that improves the education, self-esteem and employment prospects of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men.

As part of the partnership – and to coincide with National Reconciliation Week – Clontarf Foundation students presented to 

UGL teams in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Perth hosted a stand-out event with a morning tea and an engaging dance presentation by Clontarf’s Yule Brook Academy students.

In UGL’s North Sydney office, Clontarf students from the Dunheved Academy presented UGL staff with an Acknowledgement of Country, an inspiring and engaging presentation, and an overview of their academy.
