An internship opportunity is paving the way for future engineers within CIMIC Group. Suzanne Brian, a recipient of the CIMIC Women in Engineering Scholarship, is making impressive strides in her internship at UGL, becoming the first from the program to be placed here.
Through the CIMIC program in alliance with the University of New South Wales (UNSW), interns are placed in one of the CIMIC Group operating companies, ensuring a hands-on experience in the engineering world. "It's an excellent opportunity to apply what I’m learning in my mechatronic engineering degree," said Suzanne. "I've started working within UGL’s rail signalling team, learning a lot about mapping signals and working to update systems around obsolete parts. It's been a steep learning curve, but I'm enjoying every bit of it."
One of the exciting aspects of this internship has been the flexible structure, which has allowed Suzanne to explore various areas at UGL. "I've been able to work across a variety of skill sets, get involved in both the technical side and project management, which is invaluable for my growth," she explained.
A significant learning curve has been understanding the importance of documentation. "I've realised that it's not only about doing the work, but meticulously recording it," Suzanne pointed out. "This documentation becomes vital for future reference and team collaboration."
The welcoming culture at UGL has also contributed significantly to Suzanne’s positive experience. "Everyone has been incredibly supportive, which has made onboarding seamless,” she said. “My manager, Jackie Collins, ensured I was introduced to everyone, making me feel part of the team from day one."
Looking ahead, Suzanne is enthusiastic about her future at UGL. "I can definitely see myself here post-graduation,” she remarked. “It's been a wonderful learning journey, and having gained so much knowledge, I feel prepared to contribute meaningfully."
This internship reflects UGL's commitment to fostering future talent by offering real-world experience in engineering - equipping the best and brightest for successful careers.
