"I chose the CIMIC Group graduate program with UGL, for its diverse industry exposure. UGL offers roles ranging from design to project engineering, providing a broad learning experience within electrical engineering."
With a double degree in electrical engineering and science from the University of New South Wales, Michael Currington was eager to apply academic knowledge to real-world projects. The CIMIC Group graduate program offered the perfect platform to bridge the gap between theory and practice.
Starting the program in February 2024, Michael has been placed on the HumeLink West project, playing a crucial role in the preparation phase. A typical day includes:
- conducting meetings to assess the target program for site works
- scheduling activities and determining resource requirements
- assisting with procurement, bid evaluations, and vendor selection
- reviewing technical documents and ensuring compliance with specifications
- participating in design reviews to ensure all necessary details are available for site construction.
The graduate program at UGL offers two 12-month rotations allowing graduates exposure to different projects, sectors, and industries. Michael’s first rotation with HumeLink West covered groundwork, while the second rotation will shift to construction. By mid-year, he will work as a site engineer, ensuring installations meet quality standards.
Skills gained in the program
"I've learnt to maintain accurate trackers, manage deadlines, and track progress. I’ve also honed my ability to interpret design drawings and visualise their real-world applications, crucial for on-site equipment installation. “I now have a much better understanding of industrial high-voltage and low-voltage electrical installations that goes well beyond my university education.
