UGL, as part of the Vicconnect consortium, has played a pivotal role in transforming one of Victoria’s key regional rail lines by delivering the Gippsland Line Upgrade, which is now complete. The upgrades are enhancing travel, safety, and connectivity for thousands of people each day.
Crews worked more than 80,000 hours during a final construction blitz to install new rail signalling equipment and safety test the new train control system. Commissioning the new system between Drouin and Traralgon completes the Gippsland Line, with the first section of the line completed in mid-2024.
- The completed Gippsland Line Upgrade delivered:
- Upgrades to Bunyip, Longwarry Morwell and Traralgon station precincts, with more seating, lighting, CCTV, pedestrian connectivity and car parking.
- A new accessible pedestrian overpass at Traralgon Station featuring weather protection, bright interior with 4 lifts and stairs
- Sections of track duplication
- New infrastructure, signalling and train control systems
- Upgrades to level crossings, signage and signalling infrastructure between Nar Nar Goon and Traralgon
- New safer and accessible platforms at Bunyip, Longwarry, Mowell and Traralgon
The Gippsland Line Upgrade has enabled more frequent and reliable services between Traralgon and Melbourne and supported over 500 local jobs.
From Sunday 14 September 2025, the upgrade will also enable more than 80 extra weekly services, including 55 new weekday services and 32 new weekend services — 14 on Saturdays and 18 on Sundays — giving passengers greater choice and flexibility for travel.
A standout highlight has been the strong sense of community, with the team supporting mental health awareness, toy drives, tree planting, and rail safety talks.
