UGL has partnered with the Aboriginal Health and Medical Research Council (AH&MRC) to create the Aboriginal Leadership Program for employees, driven by a shared commitment to reconciliation and empowerment. Guided by UGL’s 2022-2025 Stretch Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), the initiative aims to build a strong pipeline of Aboriginal leaders by combining industry opportunities with cultural knowledge and community-led approaches.
Ron Jones, UGL National Aboriginal Engagement Manager, explains: “This program was inspired by our RAP commitment to create opportunities for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees to participate in leadership development. AH&MRC brings deep expertise in Aboriginal self-determination, and together, we’re embedding Aboriginal voices in decision-making processes.”
The inaugural program held at Little Bay, New South Wales, was a milestone. For Ron, one of the standout moments was seeing 12 Aboriginal employees from across Australia come together in one room — a symbol of unity and shared purpose.
“It was incredible to witness that connection. The program focuses on helping them embrace pride in their identity and become advocates in the workplace. Not just traditional business team leaders, but leaders in culture and community.”
UGL’s Taine Martin, Commercial Coordinator – Transport, took part in the program and shared what it meant to him: “The program was a great way to connect with other Aboriginal employees across the business. The workshops gave us useful leadership tools to take back to our teams. A highlight was spending time with UGL Managing Director Doug Moss, a humble leader who really supports Aboriginal employees and shared some great insights.”
UGL is committed to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees and communities. Through its internal networking group, the company builds connections, shares experiences, and helps guide partnerships that make a real impact.
