At just 16, Denzel Thorne started his career at UGL as a school-based trainee after connecting with a UGL employee at an employment forum. The forum, run by a UGL partner organisation Clontarf Foundation, was a unique opportunity giving young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men the ability to learn about different workplaces and job opportunities.
"I remember feeling quite intimidated walking into such a grown-up environment straight from high school, but the welcoming atmosphere and support from everyone at the office quickly put me at ease," said Denzel.
His journey began with small tasks like filing and printing as he began to learn about the business and the team he was embedded with, but as he grew more comfortable, he expanded his experience across different departments. "What started as small jobs evolved into significant projects with the contracts team," said Denzel.
Now, Denzel holds a dual role as a Junior Bid Coordinator and Aboriginal Engagement Officer. "This hybrid role allows me to work on tenders, specifically focusing on Aboriginal engagement sections, while also onboarding Aboriginal and Torres Strait businesses so that we can do business with them and organising community events."
Denzel’s commitment extends beyond his day-to-day responsibilities. He acknowledges the importance of partnerships like those with Clontarf Foundation, saying, "UGL's relationship with organisations like Clontarf is vital. It shows a genuine desire to effect change within Indigenous communities."
The experience has come full circle, with Denzel inspiring the next generation. He recently emceed an event at Perth’s Optus Stadium in front of young jobseekers.
"It was my chance to show students that these opportunities are real and achievable. I aim to be a living example that hard work and curiosity can lead you places. My job is really rewarding."
As he moves towards completing his Bachelor of Business and Commerce at Murdoch University, Denzel’s aspirations are clear. "Once I graduate, my dream is to one day start my own business. The knowledge and experience I am gaining at UGL will be invaluable when I eventually take that step."
