At UGL, each outage — planned maintenance and upgrades to critical assets — starts with a dynamic onboarding session. It sets the tone, aligns our teams on safety, expectations, and key changes, and brings in insights from senior leaders. A recent session was launched for the major overhaul of Tarong North Power Station, a key part of Queensland’s power network, undergoing essential upgrades as part of its four-year maintenance cycle.
As the main outage contractor, UGL brings a 300-strong team of skilled professionals to the Tarong site. From pressure welders to scaffolders, and from riggers to trade assistants, our people are the engine behind the maintenance and upgrades of key systems like boiler pressure parts, ducts and dampers, ash plant, mills and burners, fans, feedwater systems, and the submerged chain conveyor.
Cory McMeekan is leading the charge on this outage — his first as a project manager. Cory’s journey at UGL began five years ago in the CIMIC Group Graduate Program as a mechanical engineer. Since then, he’s climbed the ranks through a series of hands-on roles, including project lead, and worked across oil and gas, terminals, and now, power generation.
“This project is a great opportunity for me to grow as a young project manager, which is only possible through the investment UGL has put into my development over the past five years,” Cory explains. “The session we held at Tarong gave me the opportunity to share the lessons we've learned over the past few years and to help shape the site culture we want to foster moving forward."
This session and project reflect the best of what UGL stands for: leadership, safety, integrity, and growth. With a team like this, and a vision that brings people together, we’re powering more than just infrastructure — we’re powering futures.
