We’re proud to announce that UGL, along with our joint venture businesses and partners, has 11 finalists in multiple categories at the 2025 Rail Industry Awards, hosted by the Australasian Railway Association.
This annual event celebrates the outstanding achievements of rail industry leaders across Australia and New Zealand. The winners will be announced at the Gala Dinner on Wednesday, 17 September, at the International Convention Centre in Sydney.
Highlights of UGL’s finalist entries:
Rail Freight Excellence Award
UGL’s role in the KiwiRail Wagon Replacement Program – in partnership with KiwiRail and PT Inka – has been recognised for its innovative delivery of new wagons and the revitalisation of Dunedin’s Hillside Workshop.
Passenger Operations Excellence Award
- Metro Trains Sydney(MTS): For launching the first passenger services on the Sydney Metro City Line, connecting Chatswood to Sydenham.
- Metro Trains Melbourne(MTM): For modernising systems for planned rail replacementservices, enhancing efficiency and reliability.
Infrastructure Project Excellence Award
MTS and Mass Transit Rail (MTR) Australia (UGL’s joint venture partner) have been recognised for the successful opening of the Sydney Metro City Line.
Safety Excellence Award
MTM has been acknowledged for its Community Connectors program, promoting safer and more inclusive networks.
Sustainability Excellence Award
MTM has also been nominated for Leading the Way in Sustainability Practice, a project that sets a benchmark in environmentally responsible operations.
Customer Service Excellence Award
MTS impressed with its exceptional New Year’s Eve 2024 service, delivering smooth travel experiences during peak celebrations.
Employee Engagement Excellence Award
- UGL’s G.R.E.A.T. Initiative in Western Australia was recognised for promoting positive workplace culture. G.R.E.A.T., which stands for Growth, Relationships, Energy, Authenticity, and Trust, was created to support our growing rail and technology systems team in Perth. Through workshops and inclusive team-led initiatives, it’s built stronger communication, connection, and culture.
- MTM’s Metro Tunnel Transformation Communications Program stood out for keeping teams informed and connected.
Rail Innovation of the Year
- UGL’s Corridor Intrusion Detection System and Object Detection System earned praise for advancing rail safety and technology.
- MTM and Major Roads Projects Victoria were nominated for the Overhead Line Remote Isolation System, developed under the North East Link Project.
These nominations represent the dedication, innovation, and excellence of our teams across Australia and New Zealand. From freight to infrastructure, customer experience to safety, UGL and our partners are helping shape the future of rail.
