Dreams come true for engineering students

For many aspiring engineers, getting a foot in the door is often the hardest step, and navigating the recruitment process can be challenging.

UGL is committed to hiring and supporting the next generation of engineers. UGL Talent Acquisition Lead, Sharnie Hoskin, recently sat on the panel at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Find Industrial Training event. Designed to connect students with career opportunities, the event emphasised how to navigate the recruitment process, build meaningful industry connections, and secure internships or employment.

The event proved to be a game-changer for one accomplished student who stood out from the crowd. They have since completed our recruitment process and landed a job at UGL!

"The student arrived at the UNSW event incredibly prepared, bringing copies of their resume and references, and was dressed professionally," said Sharnie. "Their focus, organisation, and confidence made them stand out. It's a great example of how taking initiative and being prepared can lead to genuine opportunities."

For UGL, the event was about recruitment and giving back. "What I love most about events like these is engaging with students and helping them understand how to take those first steps into the industry," said Sharnie. "They often don’t realise how small actions like attending an event, asking questions, and reaching out, can open doors to their dream jobs."

Sharnie was joined at the event by UGL Submissions Manager, Cynthia Krishna, and UGL Rail Systems Engineer, Tin Nguyen.

Cynthia found the experience beneficial for students and personally rewarding. “It was rewarding to be able to engage with students and contribute in a practical way,” said Cynthia. “Hearing directly about their expectations, concerns and career goals also helps us to ensure how we talk about opportunities remains relevant and realistic for those entering the workforce.”

The event gave Tin the opportunity to connect with graduates and offer career guidance. “The interactive sessions, where students engaged with me as a UNSW alumnus, really stood out,” said Tin. “It was inspiring to see students take the initiative to network and showcase their enthusiasm for their future careers.”

A recurring theme throughout the event was the importance of persistence in the job search process. Sharnie emphasised to students that it’s normal to face challenges along the way, but success comes to those who persevere.

"Don’t get disheartened if it’s not an immediate ‘yes,’” she said. “It’s vital to keep pushing forward. Even if your first role isn’t your dream job, focus on gaining experience and value it as a critical stepping-stone to future opportunities."
