“Ambition set my course. UGL gave me the platform to go further.”
After nearly four decades at UGL, Project Director Eugene Alessi's journey highlights growth, opportunity, and loyalty. It reflects what's possible when a business invests in its people, and when those people invest back.
Eugene joined UGL (then United Construction) in 1988 as a senior project engineer, six years after graduating from university. From the beginning, he understood the culture at UGL.
“I felt like I belonged, in a family sense, from the word go.”
That feeling shaped how he built his career at UGL, and it is why he is still here today.
Eugene’s career advanced from project delivery into operations and general management, including time as an executive general manager. He now applies that executive experience to major programs as a project director, bringing deep domain knowledge and people leadership to complex delivery.
“Opportunities were continually presented, and I thrived in taking them on.”
Eugene’s experience spans Australia’s major industries, including oil and gas, mining and minerals, power and utilities, and large‑scale infrastructure. He has led complex programs and held senior roles in collaborative contracting models across the industry.
“My journey has spanned countless projects and sectors, each one contributing to the depth of experience I carry today.”
For Eugene, commercial growth and people growth are inseparable.
“You cannot grow a business unless you grow your people.”
His leadership approach centres on building trust quickly, and fostering an environment where people choose to stay.
“It is about helping people develop, achieve and reach their full potential under your guidance and care.”
Eugene’s career reflects what is possible at UGL. Here, leadership and growth go hand-in-hand. We offer career pathways across diverse industries and support our people to reach their goals.
Many of our senior leaders, like Eugene, built their careers here and have grown with the business, showcasing our commitment to developing and retaining great talent.
