In power generation, skills are proven under pressure, often in tight, complex environments. UGL is bringing that reality into training with a facility designed to better prepare crews before they reach site.
Developed with Weld Australia, Delta Electricity and industry partners, the Pressure Welding Training Container provides welders and outage teams with a practical environment to build capability. It reflects a shared focus on lifting standards, strengthening skills and improving safety across the sector.
Rather than training in a conventional workshop, participants work in an environment that mirrors boiler outage conditions, including confined spaces and restricted access. This builds not only technical capability, but also situational awareness, decision-making and confidence under pressure.
UGL’s team at Vales Point, New South Wales played a key role in shaping the facility, ensuring it reflects real operational challenges. Their experience helped translate site conditions into a training environment that is immediately relevant and practical.
The container combines hands-on training with digital tools, including augmented reality welding and access to procedures and walkthroughs, allowing participants to refine their skills before applying them on site.
The result is stronger outcomes across the board. Welders improve precision and consistency, inspectors sharpen their assessment, and outage teams gain a clearer understanding of how welding supports delivery, leading to safer work, quality outcomes and efficient outages.
UGL’s Services Manager, Chris Oliver explains:
“This initiative reflects a shift in how the industry approaches training. It sets a benchmark for delivering consistent, high-quality capability development that supports the long-term strength and safety of the workforce.”
As demand for skilled workers continues to grow, UGL is helping prepare the next generation while continuing to support those already in the field.
