UGL has achieved a construction milestone at Neerabup Terminal, successfully completing the installation of the first 330kV gantry structure next to live network condition, as part of the Clean Energy Link program by Western Power.
Achieving this milestone required the installation of a new gantry frame and beam—approximately 26 metres high—using a 150-tonne crane, extending the existing 330kV bay infrastructure. All works were delivered safely while the network remained energised, with construction activities maintained outside the six-metre exclusion zone of live assets.
Originally planned to occur during an outage, changing network requirements prompted our project team to develop an alternative construction methodology to enable safe delivery next to live conditions. This approach was underpinned by detailed planning, constructability reviews, risk workshops and close coordination with Western Power, Future Power and specialist delivery partners.
More than 65 personnel were involved on site, including crane crews, riggers, engineers and line workers completing high-level structural connections.
“This milestone highlights the strength of our partnership with Western Power and the depth of planning behind the works. Delivering gantry infrastructure of this scale next to live 330kV conditions is a first for the network, and the team executed it safely and with precision,” said Jiang Aizezi, Project Manager at UGL.
John Greaves, General Manager for Transmission & Utilities Projects, added: “Our customers rely on us to solve complex infrastructure challenges, and this achievement reflects the knowledge and expertise our people bring to every project. It's a testament to our people and the critical role they play in supporting Western Australia's energy future.”
Completion of the gantry enables the next phase of works, supporting increased power flow capability and the integration of renewable energy into WA’s electricity network.
