The UGL team in Gladstone recently identified an opportunity to strengthen hand and finger safety practices. Phil Leu, UGL GLNG Contract Manager, led the charge by introducing a practical initiative aimed at maintenance and project teams in the field.
Building on UGL’s successful Chunk of Chalk/Safe Hands program, the new approach - tailored for the liquefied natural gas environment - uses stickers to clearly mark potential pinch points during “Take 5” pre-work checks.
Phil championed site-wide adoption to ensure consistent hazard identification across all workgroups. After six months of collaboration with the client and stakeholders, the initiative evolved into a comprehensive hand and finger safety awareness campaign, now officially launched.
Phil’s leadership earned him a Very Best Award in the Safety category.
“At UGL, safety underpins everything we do, and it’s great to see employees going above and beyond to ensure risks are mitigated,” said Shaun Petersen, UGL Gladstone Area Manager, who nominated Phil.
The program includes dedicated safety sessions for all personnel, including remote field workers and contractors, led by Phil and HSE representatives. This initiative marks a significant step toward strengthening workplace safety culture and reducing injury risks across the site.
