Construction at Neoen’s Muchea Battery has moved from concept to reality. Boots are on the ground, machinery is in motion, and site work is officially underway for Neoen’s first six-hour long-duration battery powered by Tesla Megapacks, as part of Tesla’s EPC-led project.
UGL moved expertly from contract award to breaking ground, completing early works including a 1.3 kilometre access road upgrade and establishment of the main laydown area before the end of 2025. These activities delivered safe, reliable site access and an efficient start to construction.
A key early focus has been securing approvals for work within the gas pipeline corridor and the road reserve. Close collaboration with the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline team, the Shire of Chittering, and Main Roads Western Australia has supported safe, compliant progress and demonstrates UGL’s strong stakeholder partnerships.
The workforce on site has grown steadily throughout the opening months of construction. Bulk civil works are progressing, supported by clear standards across design, materials and verification. Additional teams will mobilise for civil foundations, electrical works, battery installation and commissioning as the project advances.
Sandeep Kamath, UGL Project Manager, said:
“Muchea is an important project for the state, our client and our partners. From day one we have focused on building a strong safety culture, working closely with stakeholders and delivering high-quality outcomes. This project shows what can be achieved through planning, teamwork and a shared commitment to excellence.”
Over the coming months, the team will complete major civil activities and prepare for the arrival of Tesla Megapacks and associated infrastructure, positioning the project for a smooth installation and commissioning phase.
UGL is a major player in engineering design, procurement, construction and operations and maintenance for batteries across Australia, with 3.6 GWh installed and commissioned across 13 solar farms and 2.15 GWh under construction. We are proud to have delivered the engineering design and construction of eight batteries nationwide, including the Western Downs Battery and we have three battery projects currently under construction.
