When precision execution helps unlock greater carbon storage capacity, every action counts.
UGL is playing a key role on Chevron’s Gorgon Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Project, located off the northwestern coast of Western Australia.
CCS is a technology that captures carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, transports them, and stores them deep underground so they do not enter the atmosphere.
As part of the project, UGL is delivering construction services including:
- detailed planning and constructability studies
- substation, module and equipment installation
- structural assembly
- above and below ground piping, electrical and instrumentation works.
These upgrades will enhance the system’s ability to manage reservoir water, which is essential for increasing CO₂ injection rates. Higher injection rates improve the CCS system’s capacity to transport and store larger volumes of CO₂ underground more efficiently, enabling long-term carbon storage performance.
A key milestone involved safely installing substations, modules and equipment at Drill Centre D using an LG 1800 crane, the largest of its type in the southern hemisphere. Safe management of this high-risk work drew on strong technical expertise from our partners, disciplined lift planning, and the ability to adapt to site conditions, environmental factors and evolving technical requirements. The team’s safety culture and collaborative approach were critical to the success of the heavy lift campaign.
Throughout the 10-day crane build and subsequent lift operations, UGL worked closely with key contractors and our client, Chevron, to align engineering requirements, manage work areas, confirm critical lift plans, and ensure all risk controls were met. This alignment enabled each lift to be completed in sequence as meticulously planned - safely, accurately and on time.
With the Drill Centre D heavy lift campaign now complete, the next step is to dismantle the LG1800 and relocate it to Drill Centre E for the next phase of heavy lift installation works.
“I am incredibly proud of what the team has achieved here. Their professionalism and collaborative approach, ensuring every stakeholder including our valued contracting partners were enabled to deliver their best work, set the entire project team up for continued success as we move into future phases,” shared Jason King, UGL Senior Project Manager.
Congratulations to the UGL team for their dedication, teamwork and commitment to delivering this milestone safely and successfully.
