UGL to deliver Stage 2 of Neoen's Goyder Battery with Tesla in South Australia

UGL, a member of the CIMIC Group, has been selected by Neoen and Tesla to deliver Stage 2 of Neoen’s Goyder Battery in South Australia, expanding one of the State’s large scale battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Stage 2 will add a further 227 MW / 907 MWh of storage capacity, matching Stage 1 (currently under construction by UGL for Neoen and Tesla), and will bring the total capacity of Goyder Battery to 454 MW / 1,814 MWh.

UGL will deliver balance of plant works including civil, electrical and high-voltage infrastructure installation of Tesla’s new Megablock technology, as well as testing and commissioning of the balance of plant.

ACS Group and HOCHTIEF Chief Executive Officer and CIMIC Group Executive Chairman Juan Santamaría said:

“This award reflects the strength of our partnership with Neoen and Tesla, and our shared focus on delivering reliable, large-scale, critical energy infrastructure. With the inclusion of Stage 2, UGL’s combined contracted capacity for Neoen’s battery projects in Australia would exceed 7 GWh. Goyder Battery will play a vital role in supporting grid stability and South Australia’s transition to renewable energy.”

UGL Managing Director Sam Goldsmith said:

“We are pleased to continue working with Neoen and Tesla on the next stage of the former’s Goyder Battery. Building on Stage 1, this project will highlight UGL’s capability in large-scale energy storage and strengthen our role in supporting a more resilient energy system and the integration of renewables.”

Goyder Battery is part of Neoen’s flagship Goyder Renewables Zone, located in South Australia’s Mid-North, and will contribute to the State’s energy reliability by offering long-duration storage services.

Site works for Stage 2 are expected to commence in August 2026, with the project anticipated to be operational in 2028.
