UGLs Tanya Khanna breaks stereotypes and simplifies STEM

For UGL Senior Control System Engineer Tanya Khanna, speaking to young students about a career in STEM was an opportunity to inspire the next generation, but unexpectantly, she also learnt from them.


“Kids think in very simple ways… sometimes we tend to overcomplicate, but the solution is right there. Speaking to the students was a nice reminder to simplify things,” said Tanya.


Speaking to Year 5 and 6 students (aged 11–12), Tanya connected her work in railway station design to everyday experiences. “The little lights you see around an auditorium, this is what electrical engineers do,” she explained.


By linking engineering to familiar environments like train stations, students quickly engaged. “Most of the children had been on trains and through station, so they could relate easily,” she said.


Students were eager to understand subject pathways. “They asked whether I studied science and what subjects I chose,” Tanya said.


She highlighted maths as essential for STEM, alongside subjects like physics, chemistry, and—depending on the pathway—biology. These early insights help students begin thinking about future options with greater clarity.


As one of few women in her team, Tanya also shared her experience. “I work alongside a very supportive team of men, and women are just as capable.”


Her presence helped challenge stereotypes and encourage young girls to consider careers in engineering.


“Different perspectives make the workplace better,” said Tanya.
