Graduate Engineer, Saffron Butler, began her career at UGL with a dream role in mind, initially drawn to renewable energy. Over a year on, exposure to a diverse range of projects across fuels and energy has broadened her perspective and opened up opportunities she had not previously considered.
"As a graduate, I feel like I know less about exactly what I want to do now than I did a year ago,” she said. “But that’s a positive thing. I’ve seen so many different areas of engineering, and it’s opened up options I didn’t expect."
Saffron has credited the CIMIC Group Graduate Program at UGL for providing an environment where graduates are encouraged to explore different disciplines and build practical experience. Regular site work and hands-on project involvement have helped her to develop new skills and confidence.
The experience has highlighted the value of flexibility and continuous learning as she builds her career in the energy sector.
“I get to try new things and gain experience, with a strong support network around me,” she said. “That’s really important because problem-solving is at the heart of engineering.”
Reflecting on the rapid pace of change in the sector, Saffron believes innovation is most effective when underpinned by strong technical foundations.
“New technologies are exciting, but they’re built on existing principles,” she said. “Understanding the fundamentals, especially from traditional energy systems, helps you apply that knowledge to newer, cleaner technologies.”
Saffron also spoke about the importance of working in an environment where people feel respected and valued for their contributions.
“Being taken seriously and having your ideas considered makes a big difference,” she said. “It's encouraging to work alongside people who recognise the value of different perspectives and experiences.”
Looking ahead, she is considering a future in project management, combining technical expertise with leadership responsibilities.
For other women considering a career in engineering, she emphasised the importance of building strong professional networks and having confidence in their ideas.
"The more you contribute, the more opportunities you create to learn and grow.”
Her advice also includes embracing challenges and stepping outside your comfort zone.
“Saying yes to opportunities, even the ones that feel uncomfortable at first, can open doors you never expected,” she said. “That willingness to try something different has been key to where I am today.”
