The WRAMS facility recycles domestic sewage and wastewater from Homebush Bay Facilities (which are themselves supplied by Sydney Water potable water supplies) and reclaims the water by  Wastewater Reclamation Plant (water treatment plant and treated storm water) returning it to the Homebush Bay Facilities as reclaimed water supply.

The scheme was designed to treat raw domestic sewage into recycled water which is then sold back to consumers as non-potable water. The intention is for the facility to provide continuous recycled non-potable water for irrigation, water fountains and domestic and residential uses (e.g. toilet flushing and landscaping to Sydney Olympic Park and the surrounding suburb of Newington. This will save greater than 850 million litres a year on potable and drinking water from the Sydney Water Potable Water Network and provide a more cost effective options to customers (the price is set lower than Sydney Water potable water charges.

The main elements of WRAMS are:

  • The Wastewater Reclamation Plant (WRP)
  • The Water Treatment Plant (WTP)
  • Water storage area of up to 300 megalitre capacity located in part of the Brickpit
  • Clean water storage
  • Connecting pipelines and other minor infrastructure works

The components of the scheme are in geographical separate parts of Homebush Bay Olympic site and Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA - formerly Olympic Coordination Authority) is the authority responsible for operation of the scheme. SOPA is also the licensee and the approved water  supply authority.

UGL is the contractor assigned to operate the scheme for 25 years which has 3 members involved in the day to day operations where the team ensures the efficient and continuous running to supply water to 30,000 people located across the Sydney Olympic Park Precinct.
