Viva Energy’s Geelong Refinery is one of two oil refineries in Australia. The Ultra-Low Sulphur Gasoline project will enable it to meet Australian fuel standards that take effect in late 2025. The project comprises five main modules, three tower reactors and three process columns. Alongside these are two large gas compressors, pipe racks, cooling towers and transportable switch rooms.

The project leverages modular construction, utilising large pre-manufactured modules for installation.

The project is one of the most important investments at the refinery in more than two decades.

Scope of Work

Delivery of the structural, mechanical, piping and electrical and instrumentation (SMP and E&I) works for the project involves:

  • UGL developed construction strategies not only during the design, fabrication and planning phase but also in the approach to the final site construction.

  • Together with Viva Energy, UGL integrated key constructability inputs in the design, improving construction safety procedures and working efficiencies.

  • Through careful layout of construction access platforms and strategic pipe runs, UGL have minimised work at height and been able to concentrate similar tasks within specific work areas.

UGL’s Bennetts Green facility near Newcastle, New South Wales created and designed the 40-tonne heat exchanger for the sulphur reduction project.
