As UGL concludes the maintenance and brownfield projects at the Shell Queensland Gas Company Liquefied Natural Gas (QGC LNG) facility on Curtis Island, we reflect proudly on a journey marked by growth, resilience, and collaboration. Over the life of the contract, the UGL team built a strong foundation of safety and performance, leaving a legacy of operational excellence and trusted service delivery.
Mobilising in April 2020 with just seven team members, UGL rapidly scaled to meet project demands — peaking at 180 resources per shift during a major 2022 planned outage, before stabilising to a core team of up to 60. Throughout the contract, we delivered a broad and complex scope of work, including plant maintenance, full-phase shutdown execution, end-to-end brownfield project delivery, and facilities maintenance.
Our responsibilities spanned brownfield project and shutdown planning and execution, resource scheduling, subcontractor management, procurement, fabrication, and support for critical plant operations. These services were delivered with precision and dedication, ensuring asset performance, operational continuity, and plant safety. Through rigorous protocols, proactive risk management, and ongoing training, our team achieved an industry-leading five-year record of zero Lost Time Injuries (LTI) — a milestone that not only protected our people and operations but also strengthened trust between UGL, our client, and site leadership.
UGL’s success was driven by a skilled, adaptable team who consistently performed to a high claibre — from critical shutdowns to unplanned outages. Strong communication and a collaborative approach reinforced our partnership with the client, enabling alignment on goals, continuous improvement, and a significant uplift in service delivery and client satisfaction.
"I’m incredibly proud of our team’s commitment and capability,” said Project Manager Daniel Swatten. “From managing disruptions to driving continuous improvement, they’ve consistently delivered with safety at the core. It’s a privilege to work with such a dedicated group."
The partnership between UGL and Shell QGC on Curtis Island is one of teamwork, safety, and outstanding service. UGL remains committed to powering Australian industry through technical expertise, trusted delivery, and a dedication to excellence in every project we undertake.
