Our success is built on a strong culture of mentoring, supporting, and developing talent from within UGL.
Project Manager Jack Connors’ journey, at the Western Downs Battery Stage 2 project, showcases how we are committed to developing our leaders.
Jack’s journey began straight out of high school when he pursued an electrical apprenticeship. After completing his four-year training, he ventured to Western Australia to join the mining boom.
His career at UGL began at Solomon Mine Power Station, where his leadership abilities quickly emerged. Transitioning into a role as electrical supervisor at Bannerton and Tailem Bend solar farms, Jack's commitment to excellence was noticed by the team.
Jack says his mentor, UGL Operations Manager Mark Groth, was a key influence on his progression.
Mark started his career as a fitter and joined UGL as a superintendent on a large resources project over 10 years ago.
Mark has progressed through several roles since then and has become a respected leader in our new energy team, known for his mentorship and ability to inspire those around him. It was while under Mark's guidance that Jack honed his skills in project management and strategic planning.
“I enjoy managing large-scale projects and thrived in those roles, including construction manager at the Victorian Big Battery and senior construction manager at Collie Battery Stage 1,” Jack says. “I was able to guide my teams and help them kick goals for our client, Neoen.”
His current role oversees critical operations at the Western Downs project where he continues to grow and now mentors others.
Working closely with Jack is Matthew Sultana, an integral part of the UGL team.
Matthew Sultana’s journey began as an electrical supervisor. He progressed to senior electrical supervisor before becoming the construction manager at Neoen’s Western Downs Battery Stage 2. His technical expertise and innovative problem-solving abilities have made him Jack’s right-hand person in leading projects to success.
Reflecting on his career, Jack credits his motivation to his children, joking that without them, he wouldn't be working as hard. He also speaks fondly of his colleagues, who have become like family to him.
“The crew is great,” Jack says. “It makes it very easy to come to work every day! We work well together and I’m proud of what we have achieved as a team.”
The stories of this project team show the success that comes from UGL’s commitment to developing our people and promoting from within. The intertwined journeys of these team members highlight the importance of mentorship, collaboration, and growth.
