Initially drawn to engineering for its technical aspects, Electrical Design Manager Daniel Grice soon discovered the vast opportunities within the field.
Daniel has spent nearly two decades driving innovation in UGL’s utilities and transport businesses, leading water projects with Sydney Water and rail infrastructure networks for Sydney Metro Northwest & Southwest Metro City & Southwest.
“UGL is unique in that we self-perform a lot of our work,” says Daniel. “I started with UGL employed in the engineering business, but my roles have always extended beyond design. I would design, move into construction support, then commissioning, and bring that experience back into the next project.”
Throughout his time in the utilities team, Daniel played a pivotal role in major projects, including the St Mary’s Water Recycling Plant and the long-running Sewer Fix Alliance with Sydney Water.
In 2015 he wanted a new challenge and transitioned into transport engineering, working on the Sydney Metro Northwest project, the first of its kind delivering Australia’s first driverless passenger railway. As one of the lead electrical designers, he worked on the large rail depot at Schofields and later played a key role in Sydney Metro City & Southwest, helping deliver train services in 2024. UGL is a member of the Northwest Rapid Transit Consortium (NRT) delivering the Sydney Metro Northwest project, which also includes fellow CIMIC Group Company CPB Contractors.
“Catching the Metro to work and knowing I had a hand in its design is an amazing feeling,” says Daniel. “Even the hidden elements —traction power systems, tunnel ventilation — things people don’t see but make everything function smoothly.”
Daniel believes UGL stands apart as a company that engineers real solutions for infrastructure.
“What makes UGL great is our end-to-end approach,” he says. “We design, build, commission, operate, and maintain assets. We’re involved throughout the entire lifecycle, which not only benefits the projects and clients, but also makes us better engineers.”
With long-term employees who share a collective mindset, UGL continues to attract and retain top engineering talent.
“It’s a rewarding experience to work at UGL, where expertise is valued, and innovation is encouraged,” he says. “I’m proud to be part of a company that is shaping Australia’s infrastructure for generations to come.”
UGL and CPB Contractors, both members of the CIMIC Group, delivered the Line-wide works for the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project.
UGL as part of the Northwest Rapid Transit Consortium, operates and maintains Sydney Metro Northwest and City & Southwest. CIMIC Group member Pacific Partnerships is also part of NRT.
