Katie Unipan began her journey with UGL in 2019 as a health, safety and environment (HSE) advisor on the Karratha Gas Plant. Today, she leads as the HSE manager for our resources and energy west team in Western Australia (WA) — a path marked by personal growth, determined effort, and a strong passion for supporting people.
“I started with UGL on the UAJV contract – a joint venture between UGL and Altrad,” Katie shares. “At first, I was reviewing work fronts, mentoring teams, running toolboxes, responding to incidents, and helping embed our safety culture.”
After four years on the project, Katie was promoted to HSE lead, stepping into broader responsibilities: stakeholder engagement, team leadership, and client interfacing. “That role taught me about leading with vision and purpose, focusing on supporting a resilient team with a positive safety culture.”
Now, as HSE manager, Katie oversees multiple projects, across varied scopes such as offshore platforms, ultra-high pressure water jetting and high-voltage transmission lines. “I’m supporting project managers, leads, and advisors across the board. It’s a bigger picture role – more strategic, more diverse, and incredibly rewarding.”
Katie’s journey has also been shaped by continuous learning. Armed with a Bachelor of Science majoring in Health and Safety and a Diploma of Leadership and Management, she’s enhanced her skills through UGL’s Explore Leadership Program and is now participating in the Inspire Senior Female Leaders Program.
“These programs helped me to define what kind of leader I want to be. I am passionate about leading with integrity and fostering meaningful connections through genuine communication and active listening. By investing in individuals and team culture, my goal as a leader is to positively impact lives, enhance wellbeing, and ensure safety in the workplace.”
Mentorship has played a vital role in Katie’s development. “Mike Smith, UGL HSE Operations Manager, has been my line manager for several years and both a brilliant mentor and friend,” Katie says. “I’ve also had the chance to learn from Eugene Alessi, UGL Contract Director, those conversations really challenged me to think bigger.”
Katie’s experience reflects UGL’s commitment to inclusive leadership and developing female talent through initiatives like Women@UGL. From leadership programs to networking events and mentoring pathways, the company is building a workforce where everyone can thrive.
“What stands out to me most about UGL is the people,” Katie reflects. “No matter the project or the role, it’s the people that make it meaningful. UGL has supported me with opportunities, training, and mentorship at every step. They genuinely invest in their people – and that’s something I’m proud to be part of.”
