David Thomas is a dedicated and inspiring lead civil engineer at UGL, whose journey from the United Kingdom (UK) to the heart of UGL’s new energy projects is witness to his tenacity and dedication.
Dave was interested in engineering and construction from a young age. His favourite subjects at school were maths and physics and he enjoyed problem solving. Dave was inspired by engineering pioneers, “In a very cheesy way, I was inspired by those from the Industrial Age and how they applied their skills to the advancement of society,” he says.
Dave graduated with a Master of Engineering (Civil and Structural) from Newcastle University in the UK in 2009, and his career took him through various roles in civil design and construction within the nuclear industry.
Arriving in Australia in early 2018, Dave joined UGL on the Tailem Bend 1 solar farm project as a civil engineer. His commitment turned a three-month contract into eight months. As a valued member of the team, his drive and leadership skills led to a progression of roles at UGL on transmission line, substation and battery projects.
Each project has brought unique challenges and learning opportunities that have accelerated Dave’s career growth. He was promoted to project manager, successfully delivering Tailem Bend 2 and later, Collie Battery Stage 1 project.
Currently, Dave serves as the lead civil engineer in UGL’s new energy team, where he plays a role in pre-contracts, design, construction, and operations. His varied experience and dedication to mentoring the next generation of engineers adds immense value to the team.
Now settled in Adelaide with his wife, Della, and their dog Toby, Dave spends his time outside of work exploring local beaches and wineries. Of his recently granted Australian citizenship, he says, “It’s great, as I always get to support a winning team at the Ashes or in the rugby.”
Dave’s story is one of adaptability, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. His journey to lead engineer at UGL is not just inspiring, but a shining example of how determination and drive can lead, not just to an exciting career, but to life-long friendships. “It’s been a long and wind roading to get to where I am today. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”
