Since joining UGL in May 2023 as the quality and systems manager for our utilities operations and maintenance business, Dean Engelbrecht has been on a transformative journey. With a dynamic approach and a problem-solving mindset, Dean thrives on bringing solutions to the table.
"UGL’s structure is unique in that it gives business managers autonomy,” says Dean. “This enables agility and innovation — something that resonates deeply with my jack-of-all-trades nature."
Over the past year, he has played a pivotal role in mobilising new projects, winning contracts, and setting up critical systems. Overseeing IT and system digitisation, Dean ensures operations run smarter and more efficiently.
One of the most rewarding projects Dean has worked on is with Western Power, a true end-to-end experience. From initial pricing and client presentations to securing the contract and now supporting operations, he has witnessed its full lifecycle. A major innovation introduced during this project was the Field Service Management (FSM) system - a cutting-edge digital tool that provides real-time tracking, scheduling, and data capture from the field.
Outside of UGL, Dean’s creativity extends into music. A passionate drummer, he has been playing at his church for over 20 years.
"Drumming has always been an outlet for me," he says. "It keeps me balanced and fuels my creativity."
For Dean, UGL’s strength is its people. "The camaraderie within our team is amazing. We collaborate well, and new members bring fresh perspectives," he says. "With strong support from leadership, we’re empowered to push boundaries and achieve great things."
