Culture key to job change
Kathleen Rhodes has pivoted from the mining industry to join the UGL Townsville rail workshop as an HSE Advisor.
Joining the company in September 2023, Kathleen has hit the ground running, understanding the legislative differences between the mining and rail industry.
“In mining it’s similar. You’ve got the general legislation as well as the mining rigs act so it's not too different it's just getting to learn the higher- level information,” says Kathleen.
It’s company culture that Kathleen believes plays a large part in of terms of people adhering to safety.
“It's nice if people accept safety as an integrated part of the business already, it makes my job a lot easier. Starting with UGL it's clear to see the culture is set up to support that,” Kathleen says.
It was a scroll through the UGL website that made Kathleen want to apply for the role.
“UGL being such a big organisation you've already got critical risk standards and sustainability plans and all of the core safety things that a safety advisor would generally get in and implement and push and drive,” says Kathleen.
Leaving Kathleen to ensure these are being adhered to.
