At UGL, engineering isn’t just a profession - it’s a passion. With over two decades of experience, Paul Hindmarch, Head of Engineering for electrical, embodies the spirit of technical excellence and leadership which sets UGL apart.
“I’ve been with UGL for 21 years,” says Paul. “I started as a graduate on the Lane Cove Tunnel project in Sydney, and what has kept me here is the great people, the expertise we carry within our group, and the exciting projects we get to work on.”
Paul’s career has spanned some of Australia’s most significant infrastructure projects, from road tunnels and rail networks to large-scale mining operations. Most recently, he played a pivotal role as the Commissioning Manager for the groundbreaking Sydney Metro Northwest and Sydney Metro City & Southwest projects.
As his career progressed, Paul transitioned from design and commissioning roles to leadership positions, now guiding a team of over 40 engineers across major transport projects nationwide.
“I was fortunate to have learnt from experienced engineers early in my career,” he says. “Now, I enjoy giving back by mentoring younger engineers and helping them navigate the challenges of delivering complex projects.
“What I love about engineering is that no two days are the same. The problem-solving aspect excites me, and I thrive on the challenge of delivering high-quality solutions.”
Our engineers masterfully apply proven, cutting-edge solutions to some of the country’s most complex infrastructure projects.
“With the Sydney Metro City & Southwest project, we took lessons learnt from previous projects to refine our approach,” he says. “We streamlined system interfaces and optimised testing, ensuring a smooth commissioning process. That experience-driven approach is what makes UGL a leader in the field.”
From Brisbane’s Cross River Rail to Melbourne’s West Gate Tunnel and North East Link projects, and Sydney’s ongoing Metro and M6 Stage 1, UGL engineers are shaping the future of Australia’s transport infrastructure, along with fellow CIMIC Group companies CPB Contractors and Pacific Partnerships
“Our in-house engineering capability gives us a unique advantage,” Paul notes. “Our engineers are involved in everything from project inception, through design phases, project delivery, testing and commissioning. That’s a rare opportunity in the industry, and it’s what makes UGL a fantastic place to work.”
Beyond the projects, it’s the people and the collaborative culture that make UGL stand out.
“We have an incredibly talented team that works together to solve complex, multidisciplinary challenges,” says Paul. “That’s what has kept me here for over two decades.”
With a commitment to innovation, learning, and delivering world-class infrastructure, UGL continues to be a powerhouse of engineering excellence - where expertise meets opportunity, and challenges drive innovation.
