From roads to rails: Archie’s UGL journey
Tell me about your 20-year journey at UGL
“I started in January 2004, casually employed to help with a tender for the roads division for traffic signal maintenance. I have stayed within the transport team during my time at UGL working on projects including the:
- Craigieburn Bypass, looking after the electrical and mechanical side
- Monash Freeway intelligent transport upgrade, helping install speed limit signs
- Eastlink, working on the mechanical and electrical maintenance
- CityLink widening, installing the intelligent transport systems
- Regional Rail Link’s Information and Communications Technology, delivering the platform passenger information displays, communications rooms, fibre optics and hearing loops - everything you see on a platform that interfaces with a system and the public.
“Currently I am working at the new depot at Dandenong South as a supervisor for our rail projects in Melbourne.”
How have you been a mentor to the team?
“I lead by example. I may not know everything, but I have a broad knowledge of various things and it’s more of your attitude to install a good culture. I always provide support to my team to ensure they have all the tools they need to complete a job successfully.”
What advice do you have for those starting at UGL?
“Be honest, open, accountable, and approachable. They’re the best things I can suggest to anyone, if you take that through your working life, then you will go far.”
What interests do you have outside of UGL?
“My hobby is around horses, my partner and I currently have nine, some of our horses we have had for 30 years. Our commitment is to support the horses, to help them if they’re broken. Recently my wife took part in the Australian Brumby challenge which is basically taking a brumby that’s been rescued or saved, you then work with them to get their trust, and it’s a great experience.”
