Brandon Phillips is a Site Mechanical Engineer on Snowy Hydro’s Hunter Power Project (HPP). Brandon started with UGL seven years ago as a mechanical engineering undergraduate while studying a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) with a major in Mechanical Engineering at Macquarie University.
His role as a site mechanical engineer involves the structural packages of HPP. This includes providing technical assistance to construction supervisors and being the lead engineer on packages.
Brandon has been on HPP for 14 months and loves his team. “From the engineers to the supervisors and tradies – this is the best team I’ve ever worked with”, he said.
As a proud Wiradjuri man, he believes that employers can support Indigenous workers by facilitating regular networking opportunities. This will open dialogue about struggles, what is working, and what should change, thereby giving this group a chance to be heard.
His advice for younger people interested in pursuing a similar career is: “It's not as scary and daunting as you think. UGL is very supportive and will help you learn and grow into your role. Don't let the imposter syndrome overwhelm you and stay focused on what you're there to do”.
UGL remains dedicated to engaging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees and communities. Our internal Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander networking group provides a space for employees to build relationships, connect, support one another, and share experiences. This group also advises the business on various partners and initiatives aimed at supporting community groups and enhancing engagement outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
